Okra is fast acquiring a reputation for people with or at risk fo diabetes or cancer as a so-called SUPERFOOD. Commonly referred to as ladyfingers, or by its biological names Abelmoschus esculentus and Hibiscus esculentus, okra among many other health benefits, is known to have a positive effect on blood sugar management.
Okra is a tall-growing vegetable from ancient Ethiopia to the eastern Mediterranean, India, the Americas and the Caribbean. Parts of the plant are widely used vegetables in tropical countries and are typically used as fried/boiled vegetables for marking soups, stews.
These tender pods, which provide only 30 calories per 100gm, are very low in calories and do not contain saturated fats or cholesterol. They are also nutrient-rich fully nontoxic and have no adverse side effects.
MYRICETIN in OKRA: A 2005 study published in the journal planta MEDICA published in Taiwan tested okra in diabetes rats. Researchers purified from the okra a chemicaL named MYRICETIN. They gave a solution to the rats by IV. Ther myricetin greatly increased the ability of the rats to absorb glucose, which in turn lowered their blood sugar levels.
A study from Bangladesh was published is ISRN pharmaceuticals, an online journal based in Cairo, Egypt. The study showed that purified okra given orally to rats through a feeding tube slowed glucose from the intestines, which sharply reduced spikes of glucose levels after a meal.
In 2011, Researchers fed diabetic rats powdered okra seed and peel extracts in a study from India published in the journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied sciences. The rats showed significant decreases in blood sugar levels after up to 28 days of consuming the extracts. Their levels of triglycerides also returned to near normal.
One study, which referenced Turkey's tradition, concluded that okra seeds have an alpha-glucosidase-inhibiting effect in rats.
Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors are a class of diabetes medication that slows the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream, preventing blood sugar spikes.
Another study conducted on rats with gestational diabetes concluded that the antioxidant content of okra may help lower insulin resistance, which in turn lowers blood sugar. Insulin is naturally a hormone that allows cells to convert or store glucose for future use.
In just these studies, we see evidence that okra may help insulin function or even act as a substitute for insulin. It also slows glucose from getting into the blood in the first place, like drugs such as acarbose ( Brand name Precose). And it improves lipid (cholesterol) levels like statin drugs do.
Okra Water Recipe for the treatment of Diabetes and High Cholesterol:
Some people say okra water can help bring blood sugar levels to normal levels if consumed daily. This regular intake may also help to keep the cholesterol levels within limits.
Here's a simple okra water recipe:
Wash 4 medium-sized okra pods under running water, Cut both ends and halve them. Put the pods in a glass of water, ensuring they are completely covered. The water should be at room temperature.
Let the okra soak in the water during the night. Press the pods well before removing them from the water, to release the sap leftovers. You can drink the water!
Repeat this routine once a day, to keep diabetes and high cholesterol at bay, or, to treat a pre-diabetic condition.
If you want to keep your diabetes and high cholesterol in control with restrictions in your diet, you may consider drinking okra water on a regular basis.
Precautions: However, if you are already taking metformin to treat diabetes, know that okra water can interfere with this drug. This means that instead of lowering your blood sugar levels, it can actually increase them. Thus, you ought to consult a doctor before you start consuming okra water as a natural treatment for diabetes.
Also, don't think that the okra anti-diabetic effects allow you to consume foods high in sugar and carbohydrates!
Diabetes management and natural remedies should be part of a healthy lifestyle, and you should stay away from junk food.
The ultimate advice for controlling your blood sugar levels and high cholesterol is to incorporate okra water into a healthy diet and to avoid the consumption of sweets and carbohydrates.
